IB Diploma in High School
The IB Diploma Programme was founded in 1968 and is administered by the International Baccalaureate Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. The first program was the Diploma Programme, which is designed for students aged 11 to 16 years. The middle years programme is designed for 3 to 12 year olds, and the fourth and most recent is the Career-Related Programme. It is a programme that is only offered in a handful of high schools in the United States.
The IB Diploma requires students to take one course in each of the six subject groups, with three courses at higher level and four courses at standard level (SL). The IB exams are graded on a scale from 1 to 7, and students may receive extra points for a TOK or Extended Essay. A minimum score of 24 points is required to earn an IB Diploma, while a maximum of 45 is required to complete the program. The highest score for any subject is 45 points.
To obtain the IB Diploma
students must complete at least one course in each of the six subject groups. They must have taken a second language during their freshman and sophomore years. They must then transfer to a campus offering the IB Programme. For example, students in McNeil High School in Austin may be able to enroll in the IB Programme at Westwood High School or Stony Point High School in Austin. In both cases, students must provide transportation. IB Coordinators are available at participating high schools.
