ACT (the abbreviation for the American College Testing) is a standardized college admissions test. Past papers are available at ACT, Inc., as well as ACT subject test biology past papers. They measure students’ knowledge and skills in four subject areas, and an optional Writing Test measures the ability to write a short essay.
Conflicting Viewpoints passage on ACT subject test
The Conflicting Viewpoints passage on the ACT subject test biology will have you analyzing two different views of the same scientific phenomenon. Also known as the “fighting scientists” passage, it presents two or more scientists arguing over their theories about a specific phenomenon. Each student has to summarize their perspective on the phenomenon and compare and contrast them. The passages can be found anywhere on the test and usually follow a sequential order.
This section of the exam will typically have one question. While you might have the opportunity to answer more than one question on each side, you should try to select the correct point of view for the passage. For example, if the passage asked you to answer a question from the perspective of Scientist 1, choose the correct answer choice. On the other hand, if it asked you to answer based on the point of view of Scientist 2, you should choose the answer choice based on the view of Scientist 2. This way, you’ll be able to correctly identify the point of view of both scientists.
One of the four types of passages on the ACT subject test biology is the Conflicting Viewpoints passage. The passage will contain seven questions that have two different viewpoints. The goal is to identify the differences and essential elements of each viewpoint. A good idea to follow a general strategy is to read the passage as many times as you can. If you can answer seven out of the 14 questions, you’ll have a much easier time answering this section.
If you’ve had enough practice, you’ll find that you need to adjust the order of the questions to the real ACT subject test. Also, remember that you may struggle with some passages, so it’s best to leave them alone and try a different one. There are three categories of science passages on the ACT: the Data Representation, the Conflicting Viewpoints, and the Research Summaries. For each, you’ll have to read the information presented to you in a table or graph.
